Online Discount Shopping

As you pay on web, check out discounts

Imagine standing at a store checkout counter this holiday season. To get 20 percent off your order, all you would have to do is step away from the cashier for a moment and look on a nearby shelf for a coupon.

Would you bother?

That's essentially what you can do while shopping on the Internet--if you know how to crack the code to savings.

The secret is to use discount codes, also called promotional codes or coupons. They are widely available if you know where to look. And they can add up to significant savings for frequent online shoppers.

What are discount codes?

When buying online, you place items in a virtual shopping cart and then go through a checkout procedure. While checking out, the Web site often will ask if you have a discount code to enter.

Online shops look to lure holiday shopping procrastinators

NEW YORK Calling all procrastinators! Online retailers want you to shop now. And they'll make it worthwhile.

Several Internet sellers increased their discounts today, along with other incentives to get folks to point, click and buy. In order to get your gifts delivered by Christmas -- especially with free shipping -- they have to be ordered this week, or early next week.

ComScore expects today or tomorrow to be the busiest online shopping day in terms of sales volume.

Meanwhile, back at the mall, things aren't so hot. After a strong start, shoppers aren't rushing back for more. One analyst expects those stores to increase their price-cutting ways this coming weekend.

Cyber Monday Fails to Satisfy Consumers Looking for Online Deals ...

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cyber Monday shoppers looking for online-only deals were often disappointed when they got to the checkout counter. According to a survey of over 36,000 retail website visitors between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, customer satisfaction was highest over the holiday weekend and dropped on Cyber Monday.

"Consumers bought into the hype of Cyber Monday that was advertised and publicized in the media. They were looking for deals, but retail websites didn't always deliver," said online customer satisfaction expert Larry Freed, president and CEO of ForeSee Results. "Consumers came to expect discounts and free shipping and many were disappointed when they got to the checkout."

Analysis of the data shows that those that abandoned their shopping carts on Cyber Monday were significantly more likely to purchase online than shoppers who abandoned carts over the holiday weekend.
