UK and Germany See Highest Gains Yet in Pre-Christmas Cyber ...

LONDON, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- comScore Networks, a leader in measuring the digital age, today released an update on European online holiday shopping activity in the U.K., France and Germany. comScore's analysis revealed that the week ending 3 December was the most active cyber shopping week to date in both the U.K. and Germany, with visits to secure Web pages up 69 and 72 percent, respectively, versus the pre-holiday shopping period from 28 August - 29 October. During this week, France saw a 79-percent increase versus the pre-holiday shopping period, which was consistent with the previous week's increase.

"We're seeing continued strength in online shopping as people go online to browse and buy in time for Christmas," said Bob Ivins, managing director of comScore Europe.

In keeping with the previous week's trend, Groupe PPR, CDISCOUNT.com, and Amazon Sites captured nearly half of all cyber shopping activity during the week ending 3 December.

Online Sales Break Holiday Records

As the holiday shopping season enters its final weeks, more and more people want to avoid the crowds and are shopping from home.

Online shopping revenues reached record highs the Monday after thanksgiving, totaling $608 million, according to data collected by comScore Networks.

"Online shopping continues to grow as more people become familiar and comfortable with the online experience," said Andrew Lipsman, public relations representative for comScore Networks.

Last year, online shoppers nationwide spent $7,643 million Nov. 1 through Nov. 27, while this year, shoppers spent $9,484 million during the same period, according to comScore Networks. The online shopping numbers are expected to only increase as the holiday season progresses.

This year, online consumers spent $77.5 billion for the months of January through October.

Safe shopping: Some tips to make experience positive

Holiday shopping can be both exciting and disappointing, depending on the shopper's experience. To make the most out of holiday buying, there are certain safety tips to keep in mind, whether shopping at stores or at home using the computer.

Dr. Gregg Gunsch, associate professor of computer forensics at Defiance College, said Internet shopping can be just as safe as shopping in stores, as long as it is done responsibly.

Gunsch tells people not to be afraid of online shopping. For those still on the fence, he asks, "Do you use your credit card at the pump? Do you go to a restaurant and hand your credit card over to the waiter" to pay for dinner?

Ultimately, Gunsch said, all credit card transactions "go to the same database with the same protection."

"In my mind," he said, "they (credit card transactions) are all the same," whether he is purchasing something in person or online.
