Amazon.com's success inspires DVD pirates

This is the sign o' the times -- pirates from just about anything that can be marketed electronically are making legitimate business models out of illegitimate goods (physical or virtual). I found this article to be quite humorous, since many of the tactics used by DVD movie pirates in this case mimic the strategy of the world's largest Internet retailer, Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN).Hey, innovation is not just the refuge of the legit, right? Far from it -- some of the most successful criminal enterprises have been wrought with incredible innovation that would impress any businessperson -- and I've looked at quite a few in my time. Arab News reported on media pirates using SMS messaging and even websites to advertise their pirated catalogs earlier this year. The piraters of DVDs have become even more advanced, with websites that have secure shopping cart services and online checkouts.

buySAFE Survey Reveals Online Holiday Shoppers Concerned Over More ...

ARLINGTON, VA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 20, 2006 -- On the brink of Black Friday -- the biggest shopping day of the year -- identity theft and credit card fraud are not the only issues causing consumers to abandon their online shopping carts this holiday season. A recent survey by online trust and safety company buySAFE, Inc. (www.buysafe.com) and online market research firm InsightExpress revealed that respondents are almost equally concerned with the possibility of non-delivery or receiving something different than promised. These concerns -- along with concerns about the trustworthiness of the retailer, quality of merchandise, and shipping costs -- are amplified when shoppers are considering buying from smaller, independent online retailers.

The survey found that approximately 1 in 3 respondents (33%) have abandoned an online transaction with an unfamiliar merchant due to concern over getting something different than what was promised, and 29% said they've ended their transaction due to concerns over non-delivery (the item never arriving).

KY AG offers online shopping consumer tips

FRANKFORT, KY (November 27, 2006) - Attorney General Greg Stumbo is today offering tips to consumers who plan to conduct their holiday shopping over the Internet. According to a survey conducted for the National Retail Federation, shoppers are expected to do a quarter of their holiday shopping online this year. The Monday following Thanksgiving is traditionally among the busiest days of the year in e-commerce, as people go into overdrive filling their digital shopping carts with holiday gifts.

The day has even earned the nickname "Black Monday," with shopping  fueled partly by people returning to work and using their high-speed Internet connections to browse the virtual aisles. The nickname is a spin on Black Friday, the all-important day after Thanksgiving when traditional stores lure throngs of customers with offers of major discounts.
